Welcome to the Internet home of The Penny Playhouse, Athen's Georgia's first professional Commedia dell'Arte theatre company (all appropriate apologies to I Commedianti Georgiani).
We apologize for the intermittent updating of this site. Unfortunately, we all have day jobs still and have a limited amount of time to keep the site up to date. However, we've added some information below, we've also added some photos from our past show, and a list of items we can provide you upon request.
NEW SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT:
Our next fabulous commedia dell'arte production will be Tavelo the Traveller (once again at the Town & Gown Theatre in Athens, GA - please see www.townandgownplayers.org for more details on this great group AND TICKET INFORMATION) on June 27th, June 28th, and June 29th. This is another ALL ORIGINAL work and features some new cast members as well as the return of Melanie Kee to the Commedia style. We look forward to seeing you all there (more pictures and information to follow leading up to show time). If you would like a ROUGH preview of what's coming in this show, please check it out in the FREE SCENARIOS section of this web site.
For any who are interested in a glimpse into our style of commedia, please e-mail John Brandt (john.brandt@brandtcompany.us) for a free DVD copy of his last ICG show from 1998. The jokes are dated, but we'll be updating them this time around. Supplies are limited, so act quickly!!!
Some ideas for our next show are including letting audience members text message during the show to change the ending (think American Idol) as well as getting local companies to sponsor commedia characters (think NASCAR). Other ideas are welcome and we assure you that the commedia dell'arte will stick to it's satirical yet commercial roots.
Our first events were a lot of fun:
April 21st, 2007 - Commedia dell'Arte workshop...see Workshop page for description.
April 28th, 2007 - Auditions for "A 'Lear' and Present Danger". We found great talent we're eager to share.
Jul. 27th through 29th - "A 'Lear' and Present Danger", presented at Town & Gown Theater in Athens, Ga.
For the first time, we will be posting our scenarios on this website for your perusal. Feel free to use them, but please identify them as being created by "The Penny Playhouse, John Brandt Director" if you use them for performance.
